Disney has acquired the rights to adapt Rebecca Ross’ young adult novel Divine Rivals, according to Deadline. The rights were previously held by Paramount, which secured them in June 2025 after a competitive bidding process.
Sofia Alvarez, known for To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before and Man Seeking Woman, had been attached to write the screenplay for Paramount. However, the deal reportedly ended after Paramount’s merger with Skydance, and Alvarez’s script is not part of Disney’s agreement.
As a result, the adaptation is effectively returning to an early stage of development. Disney will need to hire a new writer to adapt the novel, and there is currently no information on whether or when the project will enter production.
Published in 2023, Divine Rivals has sold more than one million copies worldwide. Ross has also released a sequel, Ruthless Vows, though that book does not appear to be included in Disney’s current deal.
