Godzilla Minus Zero director Takashi Yamazaki says he deliberately avoided making the sequel a monster-versus-monster film. He explained that the scale of the creatures can make them feel disconnected from the human characters, both visually and narratively, and that keeping the two closely intertwined was essential to his approach.
Yamazaki did not explain how King Ghidorah fits into the film. The movie’s previews have kept the extent of the creature’s role and its appearance under wraps, but the director’s comments do not rule out an encounter between the monsters. Rather, they describe his aim to keep the story from becoming focused on spectacle alone.
In an interview reported by The Sankei Shimbun through its English-language publication Japan Forward, Yamazaki said he wanted audiences around the world to see the film as a story that concerns them personally.
The director has not confirmed plans for future sequels. He has said that potential future stories should not be ruled out, and that he hopes the Shikishima family, the human characters at the heart of his Godzilla films, will find a happy ending.
