VisionQuest introduced J.I.M., a character tied to one of Marvel’s earliest synthetic humans and the original Human Torch. Showrunner Terry Matalas says he would like to tell more of his story, including a World War II adventure in which he faces the Nazis, but the idea remains a wish rather than a confirmed project.
In the series’ seventh episode, Vision enters his own programming and encounters J.I.M. In Marvel Comics, scientist Phineas Horton created Jim Hammond, a synthetic human whose spontaneous combustion eventually came under control. He became the original Human Torch and appeared on the cover of Marvel Comics #1 in 1939. The name was later used for Johnny Storm of the Fantastic Four.
VisionQuest’s version differs from the comics: J.I.M. is portrayed by Paul Bettany, catches fire when emotional and has a name suited to the show’s take on artificial intelligence. Bettany also plays Phineas Horton, with stunt performer John Macdonald assisting. Matalas said he had initially wanted another actor for Horton, but the production ultimately cast Bettany in both roles.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Matalas described J.I.M. as a character who could sustain a show and said he had ideas for a story that would see him active during World War II. He also said he wanted to see the character go up against the Nazis. His comments do not confirm that Marvel is developing such a project.
J.I.M. is not called the Human Torch in VisionQuest. Matalas explained that the 2025 Fantastic Four film had not yet been released while the series was being made, and the production wanted to avoid confusing viewers. He added that the show includes jokes about the connection.
