T. Kingfisher’s “Agent of Chaos” transforms a kitten’s game with a ball of yarn into a cosmic horror story. The tale was first published in Aaron J. French’s 2023 anthology *Azathoth: Ordo ab Chao* and was reprinted in Ellen Datlow’s 2026 collection *Lovecraft’s Brood*.
At the center is Alice, a 75-year-old former Navy officer knitting a sweater for her grand-niece’s teddy bear. She is looking after a kitten for a neighbor, while her niece Mallory watches the animal unravel a ball of yarn. Alice calls kittens “agents of chaos” and explains her reluctance to name them: names, she believes, can carry power. Her naval experience has also left her wary of the sea and convinced that ships should never be renamed.
As the kitten bats the yarn around the room, its loose strands begin to form a symbol in the long-dead Aklo language. The pattern, known as the Marking of the Place of Undoing, has appeared in fragments across time, with disastrous consequences for those who have glimpsed it. As it takes shape, the story hints at a passage into a dark realm filled with strange, amorphous creatures.
Neither Alice nor Mallory fully recognizes the danger. Alice is distracted by her knitting, while Mallory heads to the basement after hearing a distant, flute-like sound. The kitten, meanwhile, keeps playing. Its final kick sends the yarn ball into the opening, pulling the emerging creatures with it and breaking the symbol before the passage can fully open.
The story’s closing detail gives the yarn an unsettling history: it was spun long ago from the wool of the Black Goat, using a spindle made from a human femur. After passing through many hands, the yarn ended up in Alice’s basket, where the kitten’s play inadvertently prevented a catastrophe.
In its discussion of the story, Reactor highlights the contrast between everyday domestic life and Lovecraftian cosmic horror. Kingfisher’s tale builds its threat through knitting, superstition and a kitten’s mischief, while leaving the animal apparently undisturbed by the chaos it has helped unleash.
